OAHU, Hawaii -- While a new business is usually good news for a community, the announcement of a drug store chain moving into a West Oahu neighborhood has residents there frustrated and angry. The announcement a Longs Drugs store will open at the former Star Market location in Ewa Beach is not going over well.CVS just confirmed plans to renovate the former Star Market on Fort Weaver Road and open a Longs Drugs at the site. They are also opening one at the Moiliili site -- something that had been rumored for months. But there's already a Longs Drugs store about a mile away at the Ewa Town Center and the Ewa Beach residents said Wednesday they don't need another. This the scene at the Ewa Town Center nearly everyday since Star Market closed in October."This is ridiculous. I've been driving around for 20 minutes trying to get a parking space," said Ewa Beach resident Glenn Likong.Foodland is now the only market in town and for this growing community with a population of more than 45,000 is simply not enough."If we have any kind of emergency it won't be able to provide for the whole community here," said Ewa resident Jerilyn Aila. "I feel bad for the older people in that area that depended on the market being so close -- able to walk to the market. Now they can't."It's a much quieter scene down the street at the former Star Market site where neighboring retailers are just hoping for something to open to bring back business."It's been slow so we're hoping we have another grocery store opening," Ewa Beach resident Mona Haasenritter.Rep. Kimberly Pine said she's angry at how Times and Star Market has handled the sale, leaving many of her constituents without a convenient place to buy food."These two companies knew what they were doing, knew what they were going to decide and didn't have the common courtesy to let the community know so we could prepare," said Pine.Foodland representatives said they're hiring a parking attendant to help with the gridlock at the town center and they're also making changes in the store. One of the larger Foodland stores and company representatives said they've added more items to sell in the market and they're hiring more staff to accommodate the extra customers. As a former Star Market shopper Likong said he is now forced to shop at Foodland and plans to boycott Times Markets."[There is] no consideration to the community you know they say local, long time. Well, I don't see it," Likong said. The Ewa Beach Longs is scheduled to open in the fall of 2010.No one from Times Supermarkets, Star Markets or CVS returned KITV calls for comment.
