The shooting happened at about 12:15 p.m. near the KFC restaurant in Waikele Center.

Police spotted the stolen vehicle and tried to stop the driver, police said. Officers in a van and a blue-and-white car blocked the stolen Dodge Durango from the front and behind in the drive-thru, HPD said.

Officers shot the 23-year-old man driving the vehicle when the SUV plowed into the vehicles, police said.

The driver was critically injured. He was shot twice in the torso and once in the arm, police said.

Charleen Deuprey was in the drive-thru. She had just picked up her order and witnessed the shooting.

"Scary, scary. I was pretty amazed that he was that determined to get out of there. You know? It's pretty sad how it ended," Deuprey said.

There was also a 25-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman riding as passengers in the SUV, police said.

The two officers also suffered injuries, police said. One was hit by the stolen SUV. He was reported in stable condition. The other officer was injured during a struggle with the occupants of the car, police said. That officer had a back injury, they said.

Paramedics treated the driver and officers and took them to Queen's Medical Center. Paramedics treated a passenger in the SUV at the scene and released the person into police custody.

The driver faces charges of attempted murder, auto theft and criminal property damage, police said. The passengers face charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

The car was stolen on Monday, police said. A son of the car owners saw the vehicle on the street of their Pearl City residence on Tuesday morning.

The owners called to tell police. Police told the family to keep an eye on the car and that they would dispatch officers to the home.

The son of the car owners saw three people get into the car and drive off, police said. The son followed the car in another vehicle and reported to police where the car was heading. Police then followed the son's directions to Waikele Center, police said.
