Students at the University of Hawaii at Manoa will soon be paying more to park on campus.

The UH Board of Regents approved a one-third to two-thirds hike in parking rates last month, which will take effect in a few weeks.

This will be the first time UH has hiked its parking rates since 1996.

Starting July 1, students must pay $4 to park on campus during the day and $5 during the night.

"I think it's pretty bad," senior Travis Nakagawa said. "Parking already is kind of costly, and the economy is down so people have a lot less money than before."

The university is increasing parking rates to offset a $6 million "deferred maintenance" backlog of badly needed repairs at parking facilities and roadways, officials said.

In order to limit its impact on students, officials said that juniors and seniors who buy a semester pass will not see a hike this year, but will see a 15 percent increase next year.

However, underclassmen, who rely on day-to-day parking, will see a jump from 15 to 25 percent in parking rates.
