University On Edge Over Swine FluUniversity Officials Debate Graduation Ceremony HandshakePOSTED: 4:23 am HST May 10,
2009 HONOLULU -- There has been a lot of patient traffic through the University of Hawaii's Health Services clinic on the heels of the first positive swine flu case in a Manoa dorm. The on-campus clinic is normally closed on the weekend. But as a precaution, a decision was made to have staff on duty Saturday to deal with students who needed to get checked out right away.Students and teachers stopped in to check with a doctor Saturday. It was just in case the sniffles and sore throat symptoms turned out to be the result of the H1N1 virus and not just the regular flu."They've been busy," UH Manoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw said. "They've had about 50 people come in. They have not detected any influenza A. But it has given the opportunity to check them and reassure them."The campus is on alert that one person in the Wainani dorms has tested positive for the fast-spreading swine influenza. As a precaution, officials have isolated two other roommates."We sent out a message to the Manoa Ohana, which is an electronic messaging with the parents. We have not had many expressions of concern at this point. But we want to be available to them to reassure them as well," Hinshaw said.Officials have stepped up disinfecting common areas. This is finals week, when students have flock the library to study and work on papers.Commencement is in a week. So far the university has no plans to cancel the gathering. The H1N1 cases in Hawaii thus far have been mild. But the opportunity to spread the virus as diplomas are handed out could pose a problem. Some universities on the mainland are foregoing the congratulatory handshake at graduation."The handshake is one thing we are all discussing now, whether we do a shaka or bow or whatever. We will make that choice later this week," Hinshaw said.Hinshaw said the university will do what the situation demands. For now, the UH school community is trying to make the best of an uncertain situation. The outbreak is making for a rather dramatic end of the school year. One student wearing a mask at the clinic Saturday joked about getting photographs to preserve the memory. The health center is closed Sunday. There has been no word yet about any other positive cases.
