5.0 Quake Shakes Big Island

Residents from all over the Big Island reported feeling a 5.0 earthquake that struck on Tuesday, U.S. Geological Survey officials sadi.

The quake centered in the Hilina region of Kilauea Volcano at 12:45 p.m., the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

The U.S. Geological Survey initially said the quake measured 5.1, then changed to 5.0. The quake centered about 8 miles south of Volcano and about 27 miles south southwest of Hilo. The temblor was about 6.2 miles deep, according to the USGS.

The USGS received 350 reports of residents feeling the quake in the first 30 minutes after it happened, officials said.

Monitors at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory did not detect significant changes in volcanic activity, officials said.
