HONOLULU -- The father of local teen golf sensation Tadd Fujikawa pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree methamphetamine trafficking Tuesday.
Video: Watch The Story"What is your plea to meth trafficking in the second degree?" Judge Steven Alm asked Derrick Fujikawa in court Tuesday.
"Guilty," he replied.
In a plea agreement worked out with prosecutors, Fujikawa now faces between a year and 10 years in prison.
"Meth has been a terrible scourge to our community and Mr. Fujikawa took responsibility for what he did," deputy prosecutor Peter Marrack said.
Alm said he is inclined to sentence Fujikawa to the mandatory minimum because he had no prior record.
The sentencing is scheduled for April 6, which cannot come fast enough for Derrick Fujikawa.
"Every time he shows up in court, his son's name comes up and the history comes up. So we're just trying to get this behind us," Fujikawa's attorney Victor Bakke said.
Bakke said his client had a long-time drug problem and that he was arrested after he twice got crystal meth for a man who turned out to be an undercover police officer.
"We're talking less than an ounce in the two deals," Bakke said. "We're not talking federal cases. He wasn't making money off this. It was just to support his habit."
Neither Tadd Fujikawa nor his father spoke to reporters after his court appearance.
"He's clean. He's sober," Bakke said. "He's got his life together. He's on a good path right now, but we understand that we still have to deal with what happened."
