HONOLULU -- A young man tearfully pleaded for mercy on Wednesday in court as he was sentenced for sexually assaulting a woman in a fast-food restaurant.

The victim said the attack cost her, her health.

In August, a manager at the Kailua Jack in the Box offered to help a 19-year-old woman who was drunk and lost. She fell asleep in a booth and woke up to find Elia Hauanio, 23, having sex with her. On Wednesday, she cried about her pain.

"Since last summer, I feel like a really dirty person," the victim said through sobs.

Hauanio pleaded guilty to second-degree sexual assault. His lawyer said he was basically a good man with drug problems and asked for probation. However, the prosecutor said he failed at probation once before after stealing a car.

"He continued to drink. He continued to do drugs and he did not complete a drug treatment program. He essentially blew everything off," Deputy Prosecutor Leilani Tan said.

The victim in the case came from California to testify. She said she was a virgin when she was assaulted. Now, she said she suffers from anorexoria because of the trauma.

"I don't eat as much because I guess starvation distracts me from the mental pain," she said.

Hauanio asked for another chance.

"I just asking for one chance to do right because I know I can do it," he said. "And I am sorry for wasting your guys time."

"It's just plain prudence not to let him remain in the community," Tan said.

Judge Richard Perkins sentenced Hauanio to 10 years in prison. The parole board will decide when he will be free again.
