Lingle Vows Push To Repeal Gas CapPOSTED: 3:40 pm HST January 12,
2006 HONOLULU -- Gov. Linda Lingle said she will push hard this legislative session to repeal the gas cap on wholesale gasoline prices. Gas cap supporters say the program is working.Even though gas prices have increased this week, they are still cheaper than when the cap went into effect in September. The governor said on Thursday that it would be better to require that the oil companies submit comprehensive reports to make their pricing more transparent."Our focus on the gas cap relies on sketchy information at best, but more of a feeling that people have about things. This would require certain information be provided to the government," Lingle said."I think in providing this information, and it being used in the right way, the state will be able to set better policies than price controls," Chevron spokesman Albert Chee said. The governor said the gas cap has distracted attention from Hawaii's real problem, which is an over dependence on oil instead of renewable energy sources.
