2005 DES MOINES, Iowa -- There's no word yet on whether anyone has finally claimed the Powerball jackpot.At $340 million, it's the second-richest in U.S. history.The winning numbers from the latest drawing are 7, 21, 43, 44, 49 and the Powerball is 29. The odds of hitting all six numbers were one in 146 million. Whether any winning tickets were sold won't be known until sometime Thursday.The Powerball jackpot has been snowballing since mid-August, with 20 straight drawings in which no one won the grand prize.The biggest lottery jackpot in U.S. history was $363 million. It was won by two ticket holders in Illinois and Michigan in 2000.The Powerball lottery is played in 27 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Spending The Money So, what would you do if you suddenly won $340 million?A woman buying a Powerball ticket in Louisville, Ky., said she would thank God first, then she might faint.After she comes around, she said she would buy a Mercedes-Benz.An Idaho gas station owner said "98 percent" of his business Tuesday was from Utah, where all gambling is illegal.Wannabe Powerball winners were hoping a West Virginia convenience store will prove as lucky for them as it was for one local man.Nearly three years ago, Jack Whittaker won a nearly $315 million jackpot with a ticket he bought at the C&L Super Serve in Hurricane.Now, the store is deluged with people hoping it will again provide the winning ticket. A construction worker who bought his ticket at the C&L said, "It's a lot of money to win for just playing $1."
