UPDATED: 4:11 am HST July 3, 2004

The multistate lottery game known as Mega Millions is living up to its name.

A deluge of lottery players drove the jackpot up to a record $290 million for Friday's drawing. Lottery officials said a single winning ticket was sold in Massachusetts.

The drawing was broadcast live from New York's Times Square at 11 p.m. Friday. And the winning numbers are: 10, 25, 38, 39 and 50, with 12 being the Mega ball.

The jackpot is a record for Mega Millions.

New Jersey is among 11 states that sell Mega Millions tickets.

And when jackpots get huge, so do the lines.

Tickets have been selling at the rate of more than 3,600 a minute in New Jersey -- five times the usual rate.

One buyer at a Friendly Food Mart asked the clerk for "five early retirement tickets."

He says he usually plays when the jackpot tops $120 million or so, but doesn't bother when it's less than that -- his words, "I've got a big family."

Mega Millions tickets are sold in Ohio, Michigan, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Virginia and Washington.
