HONOLULU -- Hawaiian Airlines, Inc. announced Tuesday that court-appointed trustee John Monahan resigned because of personal reasons.
Monahan said he would help a new trustee in the transition. His appointment was approved by the bankruptcy court on May 30 to help oversee Hawaiian during its Chapter 11 reorganization.
"I have enjoyed my brief association with the people of Hawaiian Airlines and will miss the opportunity to be a part of what I'm confident will be a successful reorganization of the airline," Monahan said.
Monahan would not say why he is leaving, but sources said it is because of health reasons.
Boeing leases 16 of its aircraft to Hawaiian and said it must work closely with a trustee to negotiate new lease terms.
Boeing said it's "looking forward to a prompt replacement."
Hawaiian Air creditors wanted a trustee to take over the carrier's operations because they did not approve of the behavior of Chief Executive Officer John W. Adams. A bankruptcy judge said "management failed" and "cannot be trusted to carry out its fiduciary duty to creditors."
Among the suggested trustee candidates that were made when Monahan was chosen is former Hawaiian CEO Paul Casey. The U.S. Trustee's office has begun a search for a replacement. A new trustee is expected to be named in a week.
