WAIPAHU, Hawaii -- While about 7,000 people are expected to show up at the annual warehouse sale at Island Heritage in Waipahu this weekend, some people established their position in line as early as Wednesday.Workers at Island Heritage have been preparing for what promises to be a very busy weekend. There is a huge warehouse of Hawaiiana products at wholesale prices."We take all the product we have retired to make room for new products coming in and we stock the shelves to let the community come in and purchase items anywhere between 60 to 80 percent off in stores at retail value," Madden Corp. Vice President Theresia Howe said.Bargain hunters who want to be at the front of the line showed up about 72 hours early. Most items can be had in bulk, while others number just a few, which is why some of the early birds want to be the first through the doors. There are four or five families lined up who are there every year. One group went as far as to bring a Porta-Potty. They brought it last year, but the city made them move it because they didn't have a permit."But this year we beat them and we got a permit and a Porta-Potty and we share with everybody," Al Brede said laughing.First in line this year was a group of surgical nurses from Castle Medical Center."Don't get hurt in Kailua today," Mary Zdyrski said joking."It's the products, the price, the camaraderie, it's the fun of it all," Lokahi Molalo said."We take off a year in advance to make sure we gain the right position," Lei Aki said."The prices are incredible, compare them, and we love the Maddens," Cyndi Shea said.Corporate President Dale Madden and his staff visited with the campers on Friday."Well, enjoy yourselves, looks like you'll get some good weather tonight," Madden said. The early birds will also get quite a few more neighbors as another 100 people are expected to join the line at night and by morning it will likely be much larger. The sale runs from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. A part of the proceeds will go to the Change Foundation.
