Hawaiian Airlines pilots voted to accept contract changes that would help the struggling company save money.

A total of 279 pilots of 386 elligible pilots voted on the contract. Officials said 81 percent of those who voted approved the measure.

The pilots of Hawaiian Airlines are represented by the Air Line Pilots Association International.

The changes to its contract would save the company $8 million, according company officials.

Hawaiian wants to cut $15 million from the salaries of its union workers. The company said it needs the money to avoid cutbacks on jobs and services and to help the company avoid the risk of bankruptcy.

The changes in the pilots contract go into effect next month.
