Hawaii motorists have until Tuesday night to beat a gas tax credit expiration that will cause the price to go up 12 cents a gallon.

Regular gasoline sold for $3.07 Monday in Honolulu. Albert Hwang was making sure both of his family cars' gas tanks were full.

"Yes, both cars will get filled up today," Hwang said.

On Wednesday, a tax break for ethanol-blended fuels will expire.

"Obviously I'm not too happy about it, but what can you do?" motorist Sandra Hee said.

Some customers had not heard about the coming tax increase.

"I'm glad I'm filling up today. I didn't know about that," one motorist said.

"I think that's crazy. We're already paying all kinds other things. So to have us pay more for gas is incredible," another driver said.

Roger Acebo uses about 20 gallons a week. He said he could find lots of better ways to use that extra money.

"I could take a trip or vacation -- something more worthwhile than gas in my car," Acebo said.

Station owners said the new price will be published to them late Tuesday or early Wednesday. They expect regular to jump to at least $3.19 a gallon.

Say the average driver puts in 10 gallons a week, or $1.20 a week more, that averages to a plate lunch every month. However, with prices of everything going up, that might have to be a mini plate lunch.
