2009 HONOLULU -- The chairman of the Hawaii Tourism Authority on Monday told state lawmakers that he expects the board will approve a new offer from the NFL on hosting the Pro Bowl on Oahu.The HTA board previously rejected two offers from the NFL on a new Pro Bowl deal.The game ended a 30-year stint in the islands this season. The game is moving to Miami next year, and will be played one week before the Super Bowl.The HTA rejected a proposal for Hawaii to host the game twice over the next four years and a deal to host the game in 2011 and 2012 before the Super Bowl.The new deal is for the game to be played at Aloha Stadium one week before the Super Bowl in 2011. Then the NFL will assess the game's ratings over the last three years it was traditionally played in the week after the Super Bowl. The game may then be moved back to the week after the championship, HTA Chairman Kevin Bloom said.Bloom testified before the House's Tourism, Culture and International Affairs Committee on Monday.The league wanted the state to pay $4.5 million a game and to commit to upgrades of Aloha Stadium. The NFL said the stadium requires both remedial and aesthetic work.Aloha Stadium has undergone some repairs and is scheduled for a $185 million upgrade.A number of the NFL players assembled in Honolulu this year said they want the Pro Bowl to remain in Hawaii.The all-star game has brought in millions of dollars to Hawaii's economy. It also meant invaluable national exposure during the Super Bowl with ads promoting the game, and the often good weather while many viewers watch from snow-covered locations.
