Oahu was ranked No. 5 among value-conscious travelers by the online travel retailer, KITV reported.

The site noted the average daily hotel rate in Oahu is $151.

"I think the Internet is the way to go," said Florida visitor Zack Mott.

Mott said he and fellow traveler Lathan Baughn found an affordable deal from Florida to Hawaii.

"Usually CheapTickets is real good, but Priceline.com got me the best deal," said Mott.

Mott said he discovered coming to Hawaii before the high season is cheaper.

"Usually right after school starts or right after school is out is a great time to come here. You get the best deals," said Mott.

Bill and Sharon Brightbill are visiting Hawaii from Arizona. Like many travelers they said they are pinching their pennies.

"We booked early enough so we didn't have to worry about the weight in our suitcases or having to pay extra. People waiting until the last minute have that problem now," said Sharon Brightbill.

The Brightbills said they learned that booking flight, hotel and car rentals together saved them money.

"We're going to Maui and I booked the car at the same time for a week over there, and it's only $180 for a mid-size car," said Bill Brightbill.

The Brightbills said getting to paradise is more expensive these days but said it's all worth it.
