Hawaiian Air To Layoff 150 WorkersLayoffs To Be Handed Out Over Upcoming MonthsPOSTED: 5:21 p.m. HST October 31, 2002 HONOLULU -- Hawaiian Airlines announced late Thursday afternoon it will lay off more than 100 of its employees.
The company said low demand for travel continues to hurt business.
Hawaiian Airlines said the layoffs will begin next week.
The company said about 150 positions people will lose their jobs, including pilots, flight attendants, and airport service and maintenance personnel.
Hawaiian Airlines also said the layoffs will not be all at once. People will be let go over the next several months.
The company says about 60 flight attendants are taking voluntary leaves until they are needed again.
Work schedules for part-time reservationists have also been reduced and certain open positions will remain vacant.
Hawaiian Air said revenue is down partly because demand for air travel is sluggish and the company is forced to continue discounting ticket prices to stay competitive.
Also, the cost of the airline business is rising with increased security fees, insurance and fuel prices.
Hawaiian Airlines Chief Executive Officer John Adams, said in a press release Thursday that the economic crisis his facing demands aggressive action.
"In attacking all areas of our cost structure, we can't avoid these difficult decisions," Adams said. "As we move forward, we will continue to evaluate the economic outlook and make further adjustments as necessary."
Hawaiian said the cutbacks originate from the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. More than a year later, the company said it still hasn't been able to recover.
At this point the airline doesn't anticipate this will lead to a reduction in its flight schedules.
