Real Estate Firm, City Partner On Free Wi-Fi

Partners Say Project Was Inexpensive In Most Buildings

The state's largest commercial real estate firm is partnering with the city to offer free wireless Internet service.

CB Richard Ellis has become the first commercial property management company to offer free Wi-Fi in a partnership with the city and county of Honolulu.

One of the reasons why the company got involved is that it is not that expensive to do it.

"This is an antenna that goes up on your property, and it costs about less than $4 to run this for the electricity costs," CBRE General Manager Laurie Akau said.

The service is actually being provided by Kokua Wireless, which is the city's partner in the program. Kokua Wireless also set up the antenna.

"Really, all it takes is the one device, and as long as the building is willing to donate their Internet, it's quite easy. They ran the cable, they provide the power and all we do is plug in the node," said Aryn Nakaoka of Kokua Wireless.

You will know if you are in a hot spot when you turn on your laptop, iPod Touch or other Wi-Fi enabled device -- and find Kokua Wireless free Wi-Fi.

As for security, users can access the Internet but cannot access other computers that are using the service.

List Of New Free Wi-Fi Buildings:
  • Airport Center Office Building, 3049 Ualena St.
  • Hawaii Agriculture Research Center, 99-193 Aiea Heights Drive
  • Harbor Court, 55 Merchant St.
  • Model Progress Building, 1188 Fort Street Mall
  • Ocean View Center, 707 Richards St.
  • Haseko Center, 820 Mililani St.
  • Kapiolani Business Plaza, 1580 Makaloa St.
  • Waikiki Galleria Tower, 2222 Kalakaua Ave.
  • Waikiki Trade Center, 2250 Kuhio Ave.
  • King Kalakaua Plaza, 2080 Kalakaua Ave.
  • CB Richard Ellis wants to add more Wi-Fi to more of its properties. Its plans include Wi-Fi hot spots all the way from downtown Honolulu into Waikiki. It is not costing the taxpayers anything, city officials said.

"Well, the building, they have to buy Internet anyway. So, it's just a donation," Nakaoka said.

Kokua Wireless said the free Internet access is meant to stimulate economic development.
