Hawaiian Airlines on Wednesday announced it will begin to charge a fee for a passenger's first bag on mainland flights.

The fee will start with tickets bought on Aug. 1 or later. The first piece of luggage for interisland travel will remain free, Hawaiian officials said.

Hawaiian Air officials said the company is keeping in line with other airlines that have begun charging for luggage.

Hawaiian Air is adding fees for booking. You will pay a $10 fee to book an interisland reservation and $20 for other routes by phone and a $25 fee to buy a seat at the airport. Reservations made on the airline's Web site would not require a fee. Those fees begin on Sept. 1.

The company is also restructuring its frequent flyer program. Starting on Sept. 8, flyers must have more miles to reserve a flight using the awards.
