Maui Land & Pineapple Eliminates 274 Jobs
Cuts Hit All Levels Of Company

HONOLULU -- Maui Land and Pineapple Co. on Friday announced it is eliminating 274 jobs. That is more than a fourth of its 1,100 employees.The company-wide job cuts range from executives in the Kahului headquarters to field workers and truck drivers.Some truck drivers hauled in what is soon to be their last loads of the company's famous Maui Gold pineapples.Maui Land and Pineapple's Kapalua Resort is laying off 46 workers. Twenty-four of the cuts will hit the company's corporate headquarters.Union officials were officially informed about the job layoffs Friday.The union now is hustling to find jobs for the displaced pineapple workers.The Hawaii Farm Bureau said there may be jobs for some displaced pine workers on upcountry Maui vegetable and flower farms. Many upcountry farms are currently suffering from a labor shortage.State officials are scheduled to be in Lahaina Tuesday to offer job training assistance and advice on medical insurance and other issues to the laid-off workers.
