Financial Aid College Tips

If paying for college is stretching you to the limit we have some ideas.

  • Don't procrastinate. The Federal Student Aid form can be submitted as early as January of your child's senior year of high school. Financial aid is given out on first come -- first served basis.
  • Search for money. According to lender Sallie Mae, there is more than $15 billion available in scholarships. There are plenty of online database searches. Parents should also check with their employers, unions and trade organizations.
  • Check with schools. UH gives out $16 million in scholarships.
  • Shop Around. Half of financial aid consists of loans. Compare loans side by side. A school's preferred lender may not offer the most competitive loan. While interest rates might not vary -- there are some lenders who offer discounts for paying on time.
