Job hunting is not fun. Making endless phone calls, preparing for interviews and sending out dozens of resumes can be an exhausting experience. One way to avoid a draining job hunt is to hold on to the one that you have, and to help with this, Monster.com recently came up with a list of Top 10 Ways To Get Fired. The checklist was compiled by Jennifer Star, a New York City-based corporate recruiter and trainer specializing in administrative-support personnel.
Getting fired is a lot easier than one might think. Even if you show up on time and do all of your work, you still might find yourself updating your resume by making one of many possible mistakes.
- Lie On Your Resume Employers don’t always have the time to check an entire resume for accuracy before the person is hired, especially if they are looking to fill the position ASAP. But employers will usually get around to checking out your resume. Education background checks can sometimes take up to a month after hire, according to Monster.com.Lying on resumes is more common than you would think, and employers are aware of this fact. One prime example was that of George O’Leary, who was hired as Notre Dame’s head football coach in 2001 but resigned five days later when the school discovered his resume was glaringly inaccurate. O'Leary falsely claimed to have played college football for three years and received a master's degree in education.
- Search For A New Job While At Work Many employers monitor their employees’ e-mails and instant messages, and sending out your resume from your office is an easy way to get caught red-handed by your boss that you are looking around for a new job.
- Gossip You may overhear at lunch that so-and-so from accounts receivable has been dating so-and-so from marketing. Keep this information to yourself, for being known as the office gossip can be a one-way ticket out of the office for good.
- Taking Excessive Personal Calls Star warns that spending too much time taking personal calls and dealing with your own affairs outside the workplace can infuriate your boss, who might want to give you all the time in the world you need to attend to your affairs.
- Drink At Work This one is pretty obvious.Late comedian Mitch Hedberg used to say that alcoholism is a disease, but it’s the only one you can get yelled at for having. It is also the only disease you can fired from your job for having.
- Surf the Web All Day If you spend too much time surfing the Web while at work, you may soon find yourself surfing for a new job.
- Hook Up With The Boss Office romances should always be approached with caution, but an office romance with your boss is a very treacherous road, and often ends with someone fired. Star also added that it is usually not the boss.
- Not Pay Attention To Details Quality is in the details, and Star pointed out that one small stray zero could be a big way to get fired.
- Alienate Your Co-Workers Sticking to your own business is not always the best way to go about a job. Many offices operate as a cohesive unit and require the cooperation and encouragement of others. If you don’t get these from co-workers, your boss may find someone who does.
- Blame Everyone But Yourself Nobody wants to trust or employ a liar, said Star.
