POSTED: 11:50 am HST April 2, 2007

Investment fraud is a big concern for many older Hawaii residents, according to a new survey released Monday by the state and AARP.

About 81 percent of adults age 50 and older said it is important for the state to strengthen regulations protecting residents from scams and fraud.

The survey also revealed a major disconnect between their concerns and willingness to protect themselves. The study found that 71 percent do not check the background of their stockbroker, financial planner or advisor.

AARP Tips For Investors:
  • Do your homework and be skeptical of unsolicited offers
  • Ask for written information
  • Beware of testimonials
  • Avoid quick decisions
  • If someone uses words such as guarantee, high return or "limited offer, it may not be an offer you want to take
