The state plans a job fair for laid off Del Monte pineapple workers, and hopes to get federal funds for job training.

On Friday, Del Monte announced it was immediately stopping pineapple harvesting and laying off all of its employees in Kunia.

State officials on Monday met with Del Monte managers and union representatives to plan their response.

A week from Wednesday state labor officials said they will begin "rapid-response" help for those out of work.

"We're going to go out there and assess their skills, their job skills and determine what type of training they need, what job placement assistance they need," state Department of Labor director Nelson Befitel said.

The state is also applying for a national emergency grant to pay for job training and English as a second language schooling for the laid off workers.

The state is holding a special job fair for the workers on Dec. 13.
