The Contemporary Museum - Summer Art Programs

The Contemporary Museum's schedule of summer programs and special offers include ArtSpree (TCM's popular annual open house), gallery talks, summer art classes for kids, military family outreach and docent-guided tours. Most programs are free with museum entry and feature artists and special guest art educators. Public programs are as follows:

FREE COMMUNITY DAY - July 11 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. ArtSpree is TCM's yearly open house - a full day of art activities, music in the galleries, storytelling on the lawn, mermaids in the swimming pool and fun for the whole family. Park at Punahou School and ride the free continuous shuttle up the hill to TCM's Makiki Heights campus. Entry is free for everyone.

SUMMER ART CLASSES FOR KEIKI - Origami Cards for Summer, Friday, June 26 from 1-3 p.m.; All Ages (6yrs and older). Take a summer break and treat someone special to a handmade origami card. Three different origami models will be taught from the very simple sailboat, to the low-intermediate twist fish, to the more challenging butterfly. Learn at you're your level, and then create unique note cards with beautiful handmade papers. Capturing Nature Two-day Workshop for Keiki 7-12 - July 16 & 17, 1-3 p.m. This workshop will introduce simple methods of observing and rendering plant life. Students will create line drawings and wire models that capture their subject in a traditional manner. These techniques establish good drawing skills and can later be applied to any subject matter. Students will have an opportunity to "install" their wire sculpture on the property to be photographed in a natural setting. This workshop is inspired by the current exhibition of botanical woodcarvings by Yoshihiro Suda. Taught by 20/21 artist Jaisy Hanlon; $35 ($30 TCM Members). Wearable Art 3-Day Workshop for Kids 6-12 - With Artist Wendy Rosen, July 20, 22, 24, 1-3 p.m. This fun and exciting summer art workshop gives children the opportunity to learn fabric painting, printings and dyeing to design their own clothing and beach totes. Day One: Sun Printed Bandanas - Explore our gardens for leaves and flowers, then use our Hawaiian sunshine to sun print an original bandana. Day Two: Rainbow Tie-dyed T-shirts - Learn the folding and dyeing techniques needed to create a Hawaiian rainbow-colored T-shirt; Day Three: Sponge Painted Tote Bags - Create your own beach tote by printing with natural sea sponges and paint. Supply fee for the three-day workshop is $50 ($45 for TCM Members).$50 ($45 TCM Members). Reservations required: call 237-5217 or send an email.

ARTIST TALK - July 25 at 10:30 a.m. Gallery Talk - Contemporary Japanese Artists, with John Szostak, Ph.D., the Assistant Professor of Japanese Art History at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He will lecture in the galleries on the work of Yoshihiro Suda. Suda's work will be on view in the galleries. This program is free with museum entry. Reservations recommended: call 237-5217.
