Art Official Upsets Somebeachsomewhere In Meadowlands Pace

East Rutherford, NJ -- (Sports Network) - Art Official, driven by Ron Pierce, ran down odds-on favorite Somebeachsomewhere in the stretch to capture Saturday's $1.1 million Meadowlands Pace. It was the first career loss for Somebeachsomewhere in 11 starts.Driven by Paul MacDonnell, Somebeachsomewhere was sent off as the prohibitive 1-9 favorite in the nine horse field. Setting the pace in the one-mile event was Mucho Sleazy followed by Art Official as the field headed into the backstretch. Up the backstretch Art Official took the lead with Bullville Powerful in second, Mucho Sleazy pacing in third and Somebeachsomewhere in fourth. The favorite assumed the lead after the first half-mile from the outside. Around the final turn Somebeachsomewhere led the field with Art Official second and Mucho Sleazy in third. The leader opened up at the top of the stretch and appeared on his way to victory. Rallying down the stretch was Art Official, cutting into the tiring Somebeachsomewhere's lead. Art Official caught the leader just yards from the wire and posted a win of a neck. Finishing third was Share The Delight and Mucho Sleazy faded to fourth. Completing the order of finish was Sand Shooter, Tiz A Masterpiece, Badlands Nitro, Atochia and Bullville Powerful. Dontloseyourdayjob was scratched on Friday due to sickness. Art Official paced the mile in a world record of 1:47 for three-year-old pacing colts. The three-year-old pacer is owned by Sawgrass Farms of Illinois and trained by Joe Seekman. The Meadowlands Pace win was worth $550,000 and brings Art Official's career earnings to a little better than $1 million. He has won six of 27 lifetime starts, with all six coming this year in 12 races. Driver Ron Pierce recorded his second Meadowlands Pace win. His first came in 1997 with Dream Away. This was just the second time Pierce ever drove Art Official. Art Official paid $25.80, $4.80 and $3.20. Somebeachsomewhere returned $2.10 and $2.10, and Share The Delight paid $5.00 to show.
