age of 40 - should get a mammogram every year to screen for breast cancer. Now-a-days some doctors say women can skip a year and get the screening every other year... BUT a Pearl City woman says no matter HOW often you get a mammogram -- all woman need to do monthly SELF breast exams... As KITV-4's Ann Sterling explains that monthly exam probably saved her life. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS TAKE a LOOK AT JEAN MIYA- HIRA TO SEE SHE IS a WONDERFUL MOTHER -- AND A PRETTY COOL GRANDMOTHER .... BUT TAKE A CLOSER LOOK -- WHAT YOU MIGHT NOT SEE IS HOW BEAUTIFUL THIS 70 SOMETHING YEAR OLD WOMAN... IS ON THE INSIDE. DR. IT WAS NEARLY 5 YEARS AGO WHEN JEAN DISCOVERED THRU A SELF BREAST EXAM -- A BIG LUMP. JEAN MIYAHIRA/BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR . 57 - 1.08 that was at 3am I had no one to call. It frightened me because I had been very careful about recognize cancer. it was devastating to think at my age I would have cancer. THE DIAGNOSIS -- BREAST CANCER. ALL HER LIFE-- JEAN HAS BEEN VERY ACTIVE. SHE EATS HEALTHY AND WAS Rigorous ABOUT PERFORMING SELF BREAST EXAMS --- AFTER GETTING OVER THE SHOCK OF THE INITIAL DIAGNOSIS... JEAN LOOKED AT HER CHOICES. 3.59 I did surgery and surgery was very fast. I did surgery and I would say 5-6 weeks later I met Dr. Carney. To talk about my choices. THE NEXT CHOICE -- CHEMO THERAPY -- JEAN LOST HER HAIR.. HER EYELASHE.. HER EYEBROWS.... 4.35 -40 I didn't realize chemo would be so awful. It took a toll on me. ) . JEANS TREATMENT LASTED FOR 6 MONTHS BUT HER PERSONAL JOURNEY WITH BREAST CANCER WAS JUST beginning. 8.47 what many patients would say is ok... great i'm done i'm on the maintenance program. I take a pill everyday. But she enrolled in a clinical trial. 10.30 -10.44 being a part of the clinical trial was not for me but to help others who will face the same problem eventually and its not people my age, it's for the very young. INFACT -- JEAN IS DEDICATING 5 YEARS OF HER LIFE TO THIS CLINICAL TRIAL. SHE KNOWS THIS RESEARCH WILL NOT AFFECT HER CARE... BUT SHE HOPES IT WILL HELP YOUNGER WOMEN DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER. 9.19 -34 so she's on this pill for 5 year in addition to other care so we don't have the results of the study yet, but once we get them she'll find out how she's contributed to her community. 8.40-49 it was a personal journey because I realized I had so much more in life to give to other people. This was an opportunity for me to say I can do it and I did it. The national Cancer Institute just awarded Kaiser Permanente a more than 7 million dollar award to expand its cancer clinical trials program. Some of that money will be used here in Hawaii.
