Gov. Not Concerned About Infected Beef

State Assists USDA With Search For Meat

POSTED: 3:41 pm HST December 29, 2003

Gov. Linda Lingle Monday said the chance of any beef being contaminated with mad cow disease in Hawaii is "extremely remote."

Lingle said officials from the state Agriculture Department will be working with officials from the USDA. They will also be assisting in the meat recall.

The recall of 10,000 pounds of beef involves eight states, including Hawaii and the territory of Guam.

KITV 4 News asked Lingle if it's possible to track which retail outlets the recalled meat was sent to.

"I would expect it would be very difficult, but they are going to be testing at the retail level from what I understand. So they'll at least be doing some random checks," Lingle said. "The chance of any contaminated beef being in Hawaii is extremely remote, but we're exercising an abundance of caution as is the federal government."

Hawaii's major grocery stores, Times Supermarket, Safeway, Star Market and Foodland, all said they do not get their beef from the affected distributor. Times put up a sign informing customers its meat is not from Washington state.

A number of consumers KITV 4 News spoke with said they are not concerned about the possibility of eating beef contaminated with mad cow disease.

"Chances are very slim. There's one cow they found and they haven't traced it back. I'm not afraid to eat hamburger," Beverly Look said.

"I'm not too concerned about it. I enjoy eating meat and I love to make hulihuli and all kinds, short-ribs on the charcoal grill, so I won't give it up," Warren Nakasone said.

Experts said the infected parts of the cow; the brain, spinal cord and lower intestine, were removed before the meat was processed for human consumption. Therefore, they said the meat would be safe.

The state said it will aid the USDA in testing cattle here in Hawaii. Officials said the chance of an infected animal in Hawaii is highly unlikely because cattle are rarely imported into the state.
