Doctor Claims Miscarriage Study Is Myth

Study Suggests First-Born Boys Cause Later Miscarriages

UPDATED: 4:40 p.m. EDT July 14, 2003

One doctor says a recently released study about male babies and miscarriage may all be a myth and that mothers shouldn't be alarmed.

The Danish study suggested that women who had a boy first are at greater risk for miscarriage. It claims that some women's immune systems react to the tissue produced by a male fetus resulting in miscarriage.

Dr. Arianna Sholes-Douglas of Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore disagrees.

"I certainly would not say that women who carried male fetuses first should be more alarmed that they are at risk for a miscarriage," Sholes-Douglas said.

She said the study's findings are not statistically significant. She also said more research needs to be done.
