Hawaii recorded two H1N1 flu-related deaths recently, health officials on Wednesday said.

A woman in her 30s who was admitted to a hospital for pneumonia died in late December, officials said.

A 50-year-old man who died last week did not have underlying conditions, the Department of Health said. It is not clear how long the man had flu like symptoms before he sought medical attention.

That raises the number of H1N1 flu-related deaths in Hawaii to 13.

"This is a sobering reminder that influenza is a serious illness that can be fatal," state Health Director Dr. Chiyome Fukino said. "When he did come to medical attention, his course was fairly rapid, and that is characteristic of pandemics."

"These very different cases illustrate the importance of paying attention to risk factors," state epidemiologist Dr. Sarah Park said. "In one case, we see the increased risk for those suffering from chronic conditions and weakened immune systems. The other case is a reminder to otherwise healthy individuals that flu-like illness can rapidly worsen and to be aware of serious symptoms requiring prompt medical attention."

Fukino is urging everyone to get vaccinated, especially now that H1N1 vaccines are widely available to all.

About 36,000 people die each year from complications of the seasonal flu. A pandemic is even more dangerous because it strikes younger and otherwise healthy people, officials said.

Health officials said they are concerned because the flu that is circulating in Hawaii right now can affect all age groups.
