The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention raised the number of Hawaii H1N1 flu cases to 616 on Thursday.

The state Department of Health stopped giving public updates on the number of new cases of swine flu each week. The last update on June 24 was 503 cases.

Health officials said they changed the department's focus from compiling numbers to trying to stop the spread of the virus. Investigators are overwhelmed trying to keep up with the cases and tracing people in contact with patients.

Instead, the state's updates will be provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention each Friday. This week it was provided on Thursday to accommodate the observed holiday.

The state informed the public this week that Hawaii suffered its first H1N1 flu-related death. A woman in her 60s died at Tripler Army Medical Center on June 19 from complications with the flu. She died of pneumonia.
