State health officials on Tuesday announced it has confirmed 14 new cases of the swine flu, or H1N1 Influenza A.

The cases include two patients from the Big Island. Those are the first cases confirmed for that island.

The other 12 cases were found on Oahu.

The latest numbers brings the state's total to 58.

Nine of the cases were confirmed on Friday and five were confirmed on Saturday, officials said.

Six of the latest cases are adults and eight are school-aged children. The two Big Island cases are children that are not attending school. One of the children became ill while traveling in another state. The other child had contact with a patient that has the flu.

On Oahu, two school-aged children acquired the flu while traveling in another state. One school-aged individual had contact with a previously confirmed case and one adult had contact with a previously confirmed case, officials said.

Five of the 12 cases are students who attend public schools. One student each attended Aikahi and Iliahi elementary schools, Kapolei and Mililani middle schools and Nanakuli High and Intermediate School.

"The number of cases is not alarming since we know community transmission is taking place," state Health Director Dr. Chiyome Fukino said in a written statement. "To date, this novel H1N1 virus is behaving similar to seasonal flu and individuals are recovering at home with no complications. It is important that we continue to carefully monitor the severity and spread of this flu strain."

Health officials stressed that people who are sick stay home.
