A University of Hawaii student has tested positive for the swine flu, school officials said.

The student, identified only as Paula, was living in the Hale Wainani apartment dormitory, UH said.

The flu victim and her two roommates -- one of whom is experiencing flu -ike symptoms -- are being kept voluntarily isolated in separate rooms, the Department of Health said.

The patient did not travel outside of the state, health officials said.

Health officials are notifying the students and staff members who have been in contact with the student with the H1N1 flu.

Anyone who shows signs of flu-like illness should contact the University Health Services at 956-8965. Symptoms of H1N1 virus include sudden fever, coughing, sore threat, body aches and pains/fatigue, officials said.

"As everyone is aware, influenza is a current concern in Hawai‘i, so all of us should follow good infection control practices, including avoiding others if you are sick with flu symptoms. That will help reduce the spread of the virus," UH Manoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw said in a written statement.

School events and scheduling will not be affected, officials said.

State Health Director Chiyome Fukino said the challenge is to find out where and how the student contracted the H1N1 flu.

"Obviously we have a lot of investigation to do at this point because, as you know, most college students are out and about town. So, we are aggressively looking at where this individual might have gone and who the individual might have gotten the illness from," Fukino said.

The state Health Department finally has clearance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to test for the virus in state. The public health laboratory on Oahu has received the kits to screen and confirm the H1N1 flu virus.

That raises the number of H1N1 flu cases in Hawaii to six. State health officials on Thursday confirmed two recent cases. Those two cases involved Oahu adults who did not travel outside of the islands, officials said.

Word of a confirmed case of the H1N1 flu at the UH housing complex spread quickly.

"They said the girl is in quarantine and they disinfected the room but it is still kind of scary," said Hale Wainani resident Jeremy Pelletier.

Students were notified of the sick student through e-mail and on the school's Web site.

UH junior Ashley Jones lives at Hale Wainani and said she is alarmed to hear her building was infected.

"It's very frightening. I've had friends around me get sick even if they say they just have a fever I get really scared. I cover my mouth wash my hands make sure I don't spread any germs," said Jones.

The student reported feeling flu symptoms Wednesday and on Friday health officials alerted the school that the tests results returned positive for H1N1, KITV reported.

Crews were brought into disinfect the dorms but students say they are still uneasy.

"Since I live on the 14th floor whether or not I'm going in and breathing elevator air that may have the virus in it or walking up 14 flights of stairs is not exactly an easy choice," said UH graduate student and Hale Wainani resident Leighton Vila.

School officials said the student is suffering from a mild illness and is recovering well.

Officials are urging students who are feeling sick to get checked out but at the same time they emphasize that there is no need to panic.

"They need to stay calm this is a normal part of influenza unfortunately. But I think we are certainly doing the right thing in measures that we need to take," said Hinshaw.

With final exams next week and summer around the corner, students told KITV that the thought of swine flu hitting so close to home was a surprise.

"I kind of felt like that's over there and we are on this island. But now it's here and a girl in this building just got sick. (I hope) the school does not plan on cancelling any activities including graduation ceremony next weekend," said Hale Wainani resident Josh Rice.
