HONOLULU -- The state Health Department said Wednesday it is awaiting confirmation of two more suspected cases of swine flu in Hawaii.
Video: Watch The StoryIf confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the new outbreaks would bring the total number of cases up on the islands up to five, KITV reportedThe two adults are from O'ahu and are said to be recovering at home, officials said.Officials said the state laboratory confirmed the two adults tested positive for swine flu. But as required, the Health Department sent specimens to the CDC for confirmation.Health officials said the two adults stayed home from work once they felt ill, on the advice of their doctors."So they've been self-isolating. They have not been exposing themselves to others," said Janice Okubo, spokeswoman with the State Health Department. "We are still conducting the investigation to find out about any possible contacts or anyone who may be at risk. But as far as we know, during their illness they have both stayed at home."Okubo said it isn't clear yet, where the two people live and work or if they had traveled recently."There's a thorough and time-consuming process that goes through whenever we identify someone," said Okubo. "And through that investigation we determine if anyone else is at risk. And we contact those individuals as well."Okubo said they found the two potentially infected people after reviewing laboratory reports from across the state."Rather than relying on all doctors reports, we've been pouring through hundreds of reports and data from clinical laboratories and commercial laboratories to see if there was anything that was missed -- anyone who was not reported. And during that process we found those two other cases," said Okubo. The CDC is expected to have the results of the laboratory tests within the next two days. The CDC this week confirmed three cases in Hawaii. The three patients recovered at home from the swine flu, or H1N1 flu, officials said. Two of the cases are adults. One of them recently traveled to Texas. The other became ill after exposure to their spouse, health officials said. The third separate case is a school-aged child who traveled to California. The child did not attend school while ill, health officials said.
