Smoke from fireworks during the New Year's Eve celebration did not exceed the state and federal air quality levels during a 24-hour period, the state Department of Health reported.

Air quality smoke levels were tracked in four areas of Oahu and in Kihei, Maui.

In Kihei, Honolulu, Liliha, Pearl City and Kapolei smoke in the atmosphere was about the same as last year.

Pearl City recorded the highest particulate levels although lower than last year.

Kapolei exhibited higher levels than previously. However, that may be attributed to the lack of wind in the area between midnight and 2 a.m., according to health officials.

Most areas had better trade winds than expected and the smoke was carried away.
