On the eve of the first school furlough parents of public school students made final preparations to ensure their children are cared for while school administrators raced to meet a major deadline that allows for more instructional days.

Emilia Cazin picked up her twin daughters from Kahala Elementary on Thursday afternoon preparing to face-off with furlough Friday.

"We didn't even have time to organize ourselves. I have to quit my job for one day tomorrow and just take care of my children and do the homework," Cazin said.

She will also join other parents, teachers and students on Friday in a movement against the school closures. Thousands of people are expected to march on the state Capitol to protest closing the schools.

To help alleviate the impact of furloughs on student's education, some schools are trading in training or waiver days for instructional days.

Every public school is allotted six staff days a school year.

"What schools are doing because of the furlough they are trying to either cancel those days switch them so that they will have more instructional time for students," said Jill Zodrow, an educational specialist for the School Community Councils.

The deadline to file waiver requests was Thursday, but at the last minute, Schools Superintendent Patricia Hamamoto granted schools an extension through Nov. 13.

Zodrow said about 80 out of 255 schools filed by the initial cut-off with many more flooding into her office.

"We are working as fast and furious and as hard as we can knowing the impact this has created," Zodrow said.
