Ruby didn't spit this out at me, so I consider it a success. She actually went home and made a similar version with her own homemade char siu sauce, which I will share with you later.

  • 1 cup "Hawaiian Gourmet" dry chicken strips (At Down To Earth or you can get them from Pacific Rim Soy Inc.)
  • 1 cup water
  • 2-4 Tbs Noh Brand Char Siu powder
  • Instructions:
    1. Combine dry "chicken" pieces with water in a saucepan over high heat. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 15 minutes until liquid is absorbed. I actually use veggie "chicken" style broth instead of water. It gives more flavor. You can get dry broth powder also at Down To Earth.
    2. 2-4 TBS Noh Brand Char Siu sauce. Available at most groceries. Mix this with a bit of water to make a thick sauce. Mix reconstituted chicken strips with the sauce to coat well.
    3. In a non-stick pan over medium heat cook the char siu coated “chicken” strips for about 5 minutes on each side, depending on how chewy you want them. I like them to have a very caramelized coating on the outside and really chewy on the inside, so I cook them for a pretty long time.
