Asparagus Wasabi Tempura

POSTED: 2:02 pm HST September 21, 2004

This is not a low fat dish because it is fried in oil. So I would only eat this once in a while on a special occasion.

Ingredients:
  • 16 asparagus spears
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 2 TBS cornstarch
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp ginger powder
  • 2 tsp wasabi powder
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup beer
  • 2 cups canola oil
  • Instructions: Mix cornstarch, flour, salt, sugar, baking powder, ginger, and wasabi in a bowl. Add water and beer and whisk until smooth. Transfer to a baking dish.

Heat oil in a large skillet. Dip asparagus spears in the batter, drop into oil and cook until lightly browned. Cook half the asparagus, then the other half. Drain on a paper towel.
