Electricity Savings Tips

  • Replace regular light bulbs with compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs.
  • Save on hot water because it takes power to heat it. (Cutting back by two minutes a shower can save you $383 a year. Use low flow showerheads and diverters in faucets.)
  • Cut down on air conditioning cost. (Split system air conditioners are more efficient than window units, but the big mistake many homeowner make is they run them much longer. Use a timer to turn it on a 1/2 hour before you come home to cool your house down.)
  • Get rid of old electronics that you have plugged in but do not use. (Old TVs you don't use still zap 15 watts.)
  • Eliminate "phantom loads." (Plugged in computers, cell phones and other electronics can suck power when they are not being used. HECO officials suggest using power strips that can be easily turned off.)
