Officials broke ground and held a blessing Wednesday for what is expected to be a bigger and better Children's Discovery Center.

The popular Hawaii Children's Discovery Center is built on state land that was the site of an incinerator. The public nonprofit facility has been drawing about 100,000 visitors a year.

The center's officials showed off a new Filipino Jeepney at the Rainbow World section of the center.

The center will also be getting a bigger newer entrance with a bus and handicapped drop-off point. Since there are no restaurants in the area, the center will be getting a new children's café.

Officials still need to raise money for the expansion.

"It is tremendously exciting and still a little daunting. It's a little scary because we still have a ways to go in our capital campaign," said Loretta Yajima of the Children's Discovery Center.

The governor supports giving state money to the center.

"And as you heard how many tens of thousands of children come through every year, and I know that the center concentrates especially on children in rural Oahu neighbor islands as well as children in communities that don't have resources. And they especially like to get them down here. So, I think it's a terrific place," Gov. Linda Lingle said.

The expansion of the center should be ready by the end of the year if the funding goals are made.
