More ono grinds in Honolulu! Rainbow Drive-In opened up a new location with some of your other local top picks.
Hawaii's Favorite Kitchens had its grand opening at 10 a.m. Thursday.
The drive-in partnered with Poke Stop, KC waffle Dogs and Hoku BBQ Chicken opening a new combined to-go restaurant right next door on Kapahulu Avenue.
"We were driving by. We were going to Safeway," said Maria Wilkins, a customer. "I said there's flippin' chicken in the parking lot. There's flippin' chicken we got to go."
"Coming to Honolulu, people have been wanting this for a long time, so we are excited," said Elmer Guzman of Poke Stop.
The options include healthier choices that are not served at the drive-in from steamed vegetables to brown rice. You can also buy T-shirts with iconic landmarks from the past.
"For several years I had an idea to get different restaurants together, not just their food but the restaurants, chefs and people preparing their food and this location gave us an opportunity to do that," said Jim Gusukuma of Rainbow Drive-In.
Some of the staple names such as KC waffle dogs don't have a retail space. Now customers know where they can get the food every day.
For 50 years Rainbow Drive-In has served their well-known chili and white rice, but there will be a bit of a change with brown rice and steamed vegetables.
"The concept here is a little more healthier, smaller portion and it's easier to go and take out and eat at home and reheat it. Whatever it may be," said Hiroshi Fukui of Rainbow Drive-In.
The restaurant will be open for now from 7 days a week from 9 am to 7 p.m.
You can also buy t-shirts with iconic landmarks from the past at the location.
