Professor Wrestling: Positive Trends

10 Reasons To Keep Watching

Listen up!

Class is in session.

This week, I'm in a pretty good mood. Vacation is on the horizon (no column next week), so I figured I'd go into the break with a bit of positivity. As a result, here's 10 things I love about sports entertainment these days:

1) More Free Shows: Think of it: Two hours of WWE "Raw" every Monday, two hours of WWE "Smackdown!" on Friday, an hour of ECW on Tuesday and an hour of TNA on Thursday. Providing you have cable and don't mind a lame angle here and there, it's wrestling hog heaven.

2) Booker T Wins World Heavyweight Championship: He took it off Rey Mysterio at the last PPV, to finally become a WWE champ. Booker completely deserves this, and I can't wait to see how he reigns. His heel comedy act is pretty slick, and his wife Sharmell really adds spark to the package. By the way, the "five-time, five-time, five-time, five-time, five-time WCW Champion," actually won the old WCW belt. Nice karma there.

3) Rey Mysterio's Reign: I loved the fact that Rey had an opportunity to become champ and run with it. I'm a little sad that he didn't keep it until "SummerSlam," but Booker T is just as deserving.

4) Samoa Joe: If you're not watching TNA on Spike TV (Thursday nights), then you're missing one of the greatest acts in the industry right now. Joe can do it all, and has a huge career ahead.

5) Hulk Hogan Vs. Randy Orton: Sometimes I can't stand Hogan, sometimes I just love the guy. For some reason, he looks great in this feud -- as does Orton. Hogan's charisma, combined with Orton's "legend killer" gimmick are clicking for me somehow. This one could be the sole reason to buy "SummerSlam."

6) Scott Steiner: Like Hogan, sometimes Steiner seems too doofy, sometimes he's just totally awesome. His current series of scraps with Samoa Joe have been pretty good, and I'm a fan again. Big Poppa Pump, I've noticed, is infinitely better in small doses.

7) Saturday Night's Main Event: I guess I should have included this above, but what would a column of mine be like without a little fractured logic? Anyway, SNME is back on NBC for the time being, with two shows airing so far. They haven't been stellar, but I always get a kick out the big stuffy networks giving airtime to wrestling.

8) Wrestling Action Figures: Professor Jr. has about a 30 of the things around the house. He's 10 now, and it won't be long before toys in general are gone from our domestic landscape. Kind of sad, so I'm happy to step on Batista in the middle of the night.

9) Ric Flair: The guy is simply amazing, and still doing his thing while pushing 60. Johnny Nitro was in a match with Flair Monday on "Raw." Do you think for one second Nitro wasn't having the best night of his life, working with a legend? A lot of you kids rip me for my constant fascination for Flair, but there's never been anyone better.

10) Stephanie McMahon: In real life, the WWE heiress is a mother for the first time, giving birth to Triple H's kid. Thank the stars above. The more time Steph spends with the tot, and off TV, is a good thing.

Well, I guess there was a bit of negativity there at the end. Sorry, Steph. As for this lecture: It's over.

Scram! Class dismissed!
