Six weeks after undergoing an experimental medical procedure, Don Ho will be returning to the stage on Sunday.

Ho knows he's a man who hasn't been given just a second chance at life.

"This is not a second chance. This is about 100 chances already," he said.

Recently he has walked without having to catch his breath. He's walking a little slower, but much stronger after facing serious medical problems, Ho said.

"I didn't know that though until the doctor opened me up and he said, 'Oh, you have 10 percent of your heart left,' " the singer said.

At 75 years old, Ho was too old for a transplant and his doctor told him there was no proven treatment available. So, he decided to try experimental stem cell injection in Thailand. The cost is about $50,000.

The company, TheraVitae, said it sends a patient's blood to Israel, where its stem cells are cultivated. A week later, in Bangkok, the stem cells are injected by catheter into the heart muscle, where some will hopefully attach and reproduce, creating new muscle.

The company admits it's not sure why, but it said all 10 of its patients so far have gotten better.

With therapy now complete and an OK given by his doctors, Ho is anxious to get back to entertaining, something he's done for more than 40 years.

"I'm looking forward just to put balance back into my life," Ho said.

For now, the entertainer is limiting his performances to only once a week at the Ohana Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel.

During his recovery, fans showered him with get-well wishes.

"Thousands and thousands of people responded. It blew me away. I want to thank them," Ho said.

Ho said he's planning a special way to show his appreciation to those who supported him.
