Sabrina Jeffries
Regency Romance
Way back in the mid-18th century, there was this little disagreement between a bunch of folks over the price of tea.
Seems the king of some small island wanted to tell this great, big, burgeoning nation across the drink how its people should live without giving them a bit of say in the matter.
Things heated up until the young nation's militia delivered a right proper spanking to the king's men in a defeat some still call "revolutionary."
All kidding aside, it's said that King George III never got over losing the Colonies and went quite mad.
Now, stay with me, 'cause I'm on the cusp of making my point.
The son of George the III, "Prinny" as he was called, ruled in the king's stead during what is known as the Regency Period. Romance novels set in this period are called -- you got it --
Regency Romances.
Some of the best Regency writers use Prinny as a character, such as Sabrina Jeffries in "One Night with a Prince," the wickedly entertaining finale to her Royal Brotherhood series.
Gavin Byrne is one of the three illegitimate sons of Prinny who make up the Royal Brotherhood. Byrne clawed his way out of London's seedy and dangerous Drury Lane and along the way became an inordinately successful gaming club owner and
libertinè extraordinaire...
Christabel, the widowed Marchioness of Haversham, needs the jaded card sharp Byrne to gain access to secret letters. Should the content of the missives become public, Christabel's war hero father might swing at the gallows, and Prinny's succession to the throne would be jeopardized.
In true Regency Romance fashion, the only way Christabel can get her hands on the letters, save her father, and ensure the future of the Monarchy is to become Gavin Byrne's mistress.
Tough lot, that.
In all three Royal Brotherhood novels Sabrina Jeffries creates sexy, witty, appealing stories with delicious, anything-but-ordinary love scenes. I devour her books and like to read them when I've just gotta have a good old-fashioned tell-me-a-love-story kind of romance.
This isn't to say Sabrina Jeffries' romances are Old School. Nope, no bodice ripping and ambiguous ravishment here. Just Jeffries being always respectful of her readers and the heroines of her passionate stories; heroes may be strong-willed and macho, but Jeffries’ women never let the boys run roughshod over their lives or their emotions for long.
I had a lot of fun reading "One Night with a Prince." If you find you need a good old-fashioned tell-me-a-love-story kind of romance...
