HONOLULU -- KITV 4 has decided not to air the movie "Saving Private Ryan" Thursday night. The ABC network is broadcasting the popular World War II movie in conjunction with Veterans Day.KITV General Manager Mike Rosenberg said ever since the infamous Janet Jackson "wardrobe malfunction" during the Super Bowl last year, the Federal Communications Commission has been strict about lewdness and profanity on television."There's just not enough clarity for us to make a decision to run a movie that has the 'F Word' 47 times, as well as graphic violence, in a time period that's supposed to be a safe harbor for children to be watching no matter what the advisories that we use. So, we have a fiduciary duty to our owners, to protect our owners, to protect our license. So regretfully, we made this decision," Rosenberg said.
Discussion: What are your thoughts about not airing "Saving Private Ryan"?Rosenberg said KITV asked ABC for permission to run the film after 10 p.m., but the network would not allow it. Instead of "Saving Private Ryan," KITV will air "Far and Away," starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. At least 30 ABC affiliate stations around the country have decided not to air the movie. The stations owned by Hearst-Argyle, Cox Communications, Sinclair Broadcasting Group Inc., Belo Corp., EW Scripps Co. and McGraw Hill made the decision not to broadcast the show.
