Celebrity Chatter: Thanksgiving, Chatter-Style

There Are A Lot Of Turkeys In Showbiz

POSTED: 9:58 p.m. EST November 24, 2002

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and in the world of Celebrity Chatter there are many things for which to be thankful for.

Celebrity Chatter Michelle SolomonYou'll see that some of what we're thankful for may be cynical, some original, some heartfelt and others, well, let's just say there are a lot of turkeys in the world of showbiz.

Matches Made In Heaven?

Of all the pairings that have passed through the hallowed halls of Hollywood this year, there are some matches that are as perfect as ham and eggs.

Liza Minnelli and David Gest: They are just bizarre enough to have been lucky to find each other. Now, the two are apparently readying a lawsuit against VH1 over the cancellation of their reality show. E online is reporting that Minnelli and Gest have hired the same attorney, Michael Sherman, who represented Michael Skakel. But didn't Sherman lose that case? Oops.

Hmmm. Here's a thought, speaking of reality shows. Let's hope wherever Anna Nicole Smith is invited for Thanksgiving that there's enough turkey and fixins' to satisfy Anna's appetite, but what about the rest of the guests?

In good match made-in-heaven news, we're thankful for the pairing of Paul McCartney and Heather Mills. I recently interviewed Mills-McCartney. It's apparent that she and her famous husband both share the same drive to help humanitarian causes. She is very devoted to her Adopt-A-Landmines cause. All proceeds from her new book, "A Single Step," go to the organization.

Meanwhile, an interesting letter recently appeared in Vanity Fair from Mills-McCartney's sister, Fiona Mills. Fiona Mills believes that the media just wants to chew up the pair. Fiona Mills claims that she set up interview with her sister for the VF writer, but that the writer had already made up her mind as to rehashing the same tabloid "rubbish" previously printed.

Paul McCartney, Heather MillsI asked Mills-McCartney during my interview about how she and Sir Paul handle all of the media attention, both nice and not-so-nice. She was happy to give up a story about the day the couple was standing in a supermarket and saw a headline on one of the tabloids that said the pair had separated. She said she turned to him and said, "Did you leave me?" And he replied, "Not that I’m aware of."

Well, who can write about couples and not talk about couple du jour Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. Affleck, People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive (what!?) and J. Lo seem like the most unlikely of couples, but what we can all be thankful for is that the marriage will most likely be over quicker than their upcoming two movies head to video.

In The Movies

I'm thankful we were treated to some decent movies recently that we're not only enjoyable, but that you could take every one from junior to grandma to see them and not turn red with embarrassment or bust an eardrum from the constant explosions and gun blasts.

I'm talking about "The Santa Clause 2," "Treasure Planet," "Spirit," and "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets." And the holidays are bringing with it some others that should also fit the same bill including "The Wild Thornberrys."

While I'm certainly no prude, it's great to take a break from the regular movie fare, which is laden with four-letter words and smack-down violence.

I'm thankful for the invention of the DVD. Don't you just love the extras that come bundled in DVDs such as behind-the-scenes outtakes, conversations with directors, and alternate endings? Probably the coolest extra I've seen lately is "the make your own 'Spirit' movie" included in that latest release.

I'm thankful that I have the upcoming sequel to "Legally Blonde 2" to look forward to. This time Reese Witherspoon's likable character, Elle, heads to Washington to take on animal testing. Joining Witherspoon are a couple of great acting veterans, Bob Newhart and Sally Field.

Thankfully, it doesn't look like Madonna will be making another movie any time soon. Too bad "Swept Away" was such a disaster. Sorry, Madge.

Showbiz Comings And Goings

I'm thankful that people are finally starting to realize what I've said about Rosie O'Donnell all along. The Queen of Nice isn't so nice. In the land of Rosie, it's all about her. Happily, she's not being given the carte blanche forum she's received for so long to talk about her favorite subject, herself. Remember when she called the little people peasants? Now she's left about 120 peasant magazine employees jobless because of a rift she's having over control of the former McCall's and the use of her name. Can you say control freak?

I'm thankful that Jerry Seinfeld is back doing what he says he loves. To see him in "The Comedian" and live touring the country doing stand-up is a rare, but spectacular treat.

Harrison FordI'm thankful that there's a scientist out there smart enough to tribute Harrison Ford by naming an insect after the devoted actor. You didn't hear that one? It's been reported that Edward Wilson, a Harvard University scientist, has called a Central American ant, Peidole harrisonfordi. It's to honor the actor's work as vice chairman of Conservation International. Come to think of it, Ford's main squeeze, Calista Flockhart, is somewhat antlike.

And just in time for the holidays, we'll be giving celebrities something special under the tree this year. Do you have any ideas? Let me know what you'd like to give your favorite celeb this holiday season.
