Singer Boy George has an unusual stop on his North American tour in August -- the New York City Department of Sanitation's Family Day.

Boy George -- whose real name is George O'Dowd -- said that he wants to repay workers who were so nice to him when he did community service two years ago sweeping city streets.

The singer said that it was a difficult time for him, and the sanitation workers "showed great kindness."

Boy George, 46, was given community service after pleading guilty to falsely reporting a burglary at his Manhattan apartment.

Police officers who responded there found cocaine.

Boy George is the former lead singer of the 1980s pop group Culture Club, which had hits including "Karma Chameleon" and "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?"
