Professor Wrestling: 'Cyber Sunday' Results
Viewers Call The Shots
POSTED: 5:34 pm HST November 1,
2006
Listen up!Class is in session. It used to be called "Taboo Tuesday," but now it's been renamed "Cyber Sunday." It's the one time of the year when WWE asks the fans to go to its Web site to help shape the card by voting on a series of stipulations.
But before we get to Sunday night's extravaganza, don't you dare forget to listen to the new Professor Wrestling podcast. It's called "Old School, New School" and you can download Episode Six right here. This week, Dr. Mike Lano, George Schire and yours truly tackle such topics as the worst announcers of all time, the glut of wrestling books and our thoughts on "Cyber Sunday."As for that card, here's exactly what went down:WWE Women's Championship Match: Mickie James vs. Lita
What Should Happen: The title is vacant following the retirement of Trish Stratus, leaving these two zombies to vie for the gold. The stipulation calls for fans to vote for a no-disqualification match, a submission match or a Diva lumberjack match. Uh, I think the point is to get as many bimbos as possible on the TV screen. We're looking at a lumberjack match, kids.
What Will Happen: The WWE women's division is at its weakest point in history in terms of wrestling ability. James wins by default, really. Bring back Molly Holly!
What Did Happen: It was a lumberjack match, but Lita won.
Four Tag Team Match: Viscera and Charlie Hass vs. The Highlanders vs. Cryme Tyme vs. Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch
What Should Happen: In this extravaganza, fans have the choice of picking which type of match it will be: Fatal Four-Way, Texas Tornado or Tag Team Turmoil. The Texas Tornado format features everyone in the ring at the same time, so that's that one we'll see. If everyone is in the ring at once, it hides how limited these performers are. WWE's tag division is pitiful compared to TNA's.
What Will Happen: The heavily-pushed Cryme Tyme will steal this one.
What Did Happen: Cryme Tyme won a Texas Tornado match.
Challenge Match: Umaga vs. ???
What Should Happen: The undefeated monster will go up against Kane, Chris Benoit or Sandman. Kane will get the votes, no doubt. That's what WWE wants, so that's what we'll get. Benoit would give him a better match, but it won't happen.
What Will Happen: If Umaga loses before WrestleMania 23, I'll be severely disappointed. Why build up a monster unless he makes a great payday? Umaga wins.
What Did Happen: Umaga faced Kane, and beat him -- keeping his winning streak alive.
World Tag Team Championship Match: Spirit Squad (c) vs. Ric Flair and ???
What Should Happen: The fans have a choice of voting in one of three old-timers to team with Flair: Sgt. Slaughter, Roddy Piper or Dusty Rhodes. Rhodes will get the nod here, bringing together NWA foes of the past.
What Will Happen: The geezers won't win, but will give Spirit Squad a nice beatdown afterwards. This might be the end of the Squad as we know it, even in victory.
What Did Happen: The geezers -- Ric Flair and Roddy Piper -- beat the Spirit Squad to take the titles. The end of the SS is near.
Intercontinental Championship Match: Jeff Hardy (c) vs. ???
What Should Happen: Hardy will grapple either Carlito, Shelton Benjamin or Johnny Nitro. I'm guessing that Benjamin would give him a good match, but since Nitro is getting the push you'll probably see him in there. Carlito seems lost in this promotion for some reason. I think he has to go back to playing a heel.
What Will Happen: I think Nitro will take the belt from Hardy.
What Did Happen: Hardy beat Carlito to retain his belt.
Challenge Match: Triple H and Shawn Michaels vs. Edge and Randy Orton
What Should Happen: Here, the fans get to pick the guest referee: Coach, Vince McMahon or Eric Bischoff. While Coach or McMahon would work well, the fans will choose Bischoff simply because he's currently the most irritating of the three. Plus he has a new book out. Can't forget that marketing tie-in. By the way, it's good to see DX take on some real competition for the first time since their revival.
What Will Happen: Triple H and Michaels will take out Edge and Orton and then beat up Bischoff.
What Did Happen: Edge and Orton were the victors, with Bischoff as the special ref.
Champion Of Champions Match: John Cena vs. Big Show vs. Booker T
What Should Happen: Here, the fans get to decide which championship is on the line: Cena's WWE title, Show's ECW belt or Booker T's World Heavyweight Championship. I'm guessing the lesser of the three belts will be up for grabs, that being the ECW title. That'll allow the match winner -- Cena -- to go to the ECW show and lose the belt there to someone else. This wasn't a bad way for WWE to bring all their champs together in one meaningful match, but I'd rather see a unification of the titles -- with one true winner.
What Will Happen: Cena wins the ECW belt, and promptly loses it later in the week.
What Did Happen: Booker T won the match as his belt was on the line. So there were no overall changes. Boy, that's exciting!
That's it. For the record, I made 14 predictions for this pay-per-view, and six were on the money. That's not perfect, I grant you, but still eerily precise in this Internet age. Aren't you glad you have me? Thought so.Before I go, another reminder to listen to our new weekly podcast "Old, School, New School." Download the latest episode by clicking here. I'm not going to say it's required listening, but it's certainly suggested. If you want to keep up in this classroom, I'm sure you'll do the right thing. Now scram. Class dismissed!(Professor Wrestling is a masked employee of Internet Broadcasting. He hails from Parts Unknown. Got a question, comment, complaint? E-mail him right here. )
