Judge Delays Ruling On Kamehameha Admissions PolicyStudent May Attend School While Lawsuit ProceedsPOSTED: 5:38 p.m. HST August 19, 2003 HONOLULU -- A federal judge will decide Wednesday if a non-Hawaiian student will be allowed to attend Kamehameha Schools while his lawsuit is pending.
Brayden Mohica-Cummings is the student who is challenging Kamehameha Schools policy to give preference to children of Hawaiian ancestry. Mohica-Cummings was invited to attend, but his application was rejected when he couldn't prove Hawaiian ancestry.
On the application his mother indicated he was Hawaiian because she was adopted and raised by Melvin Cummings who is part Hawaiian.
Kamehameha Schools said it's policy is clear on the admission application; that preference is given to people of Hawaiian ancestry and that proof may be required.
Judge David Alan Ezra is scheduled to make his ruling at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Kamehameha schools starts on Thursday.
