HONOLULU -- Kamehameha Schools announced Monday that Chief Executive Officer Hamilton McCubbin resigned from his position effective immediately after just three years on the job.
There's another scandal affecting the leadership of the all-Hawaiian school. Sources told KITV 4 News that McCubbin, 61, (pictured, left) has been under investigation for having an inappropriate relationship with one of his secretaries.
Investigative Reporter Keoki Kerr learned that this is the second time McCubbin has resigned from a school during allegations of sexual misconduct.
"I am here today to announce my resignation as the chancellor and chief executive officer of the Kamehameha Schools," McCubbin said.
In a 25-minute news conference at his lawyer's office, McCubbin made no mention of the allegations when he was asked repeatedly about why he quit effective immediately, just three months after signing a new three-year contract.
"I would like to pursue other experiences," McCubbin said.
But sources said McCubbin has been under investigation for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a woman who is one of his secretaries. They work at Kamehameha School's headquarters at Kawaiaha'o Plaza.
Sources close to the case said two other female staffers in his office found out, made a complaint and they have been on leave with pay for the last month or so, as the investigation has continued.
Sources said the secretary in question kept working, but was not at work Monday.
McCubbin, who is married with three children, released a statement Monday afternoon, saying, "I am unaware of any allegations of an inappropriate relationship with anyone at the Kamehameha Schools."
At his news conference earlier in the day, he said, "While my family is very tolerant of me devoting all my life to the Kamehameha Schools, they are looking forward for me to make the transition back to them."
In 1999, just a year before he took the job at Kamehameha, he resigned as Dean of the School of Human Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
According to reports in the
Wisconsin State Journal newspaper, McCubbin was under investigation for allegations he harassed a female faculty member at the school.
A university investigation revealed no misconduct.
McCubbin said he was "burned out" and the allegations had nothing to do with his resignation there.
Some Kamehameha faculty who refused to be identified said they are shocked and saddened at the news because they feel McCubbin brought some stability after financial, ethical and sexual scandals forced trustees from office in the late 1990s.
The Board of Trustees has begun a search for candidates to fill the position of CEO and chancellor.
McCubbin had just signed a new three-year contract in February.
In his resignation letter McCubbin said, "I believe that Kamehameha Schools is well positioned to address its goals, and I am confident that the best interest of the children of Hawaii will continue to be served."
